Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin  reacted to the Karur stampede calling it a “terrible” tragedy. In a video statement, Stalin said he continues to remain in deep sorrow, as the scenes he witnessed during his visit to the hospital are still fresh in his mind. He emphasised that such a tragic incident should never happen again. He also detailed the actions he took immediately after receiving the news and confirmed that the death toll has risen to 41.

CM Stalin further urged the public to not spread disinformation and rumours on social media regarding the tragedy and appealed everyone to act responsibly. “What happened in Karur was a great tragedy, a terrible tragedy! A tragedy that has never happened before, and should never happen again. The scenes I witnessed when I visited the hospital are still fresh in my mind. I continue to remain in a heavy state of sorrow and grief. When I received the news, I immediately mobilised the district administration and issued all necessary orders. But I could not remain at home, so that very night I rushed to Karur to be with my people,” said CM Stalin.

Tamil Nadu Stampede- CM Stalin assures full support

CM Stalin affirmed that the government is providing complete medical treatment to those who were injured and are recovering under suspicion. He also informed about the one-person inquiry commission constituted under retired Judge Aruna Jagatheesan to probe the stampede.

“We have lost 41 lives, including children and women. We have announced Rs. 10 lakh in compensation for each bereaved family, and the amount has been disbursed immediately. The government is also providing complete medical treatment to those who were injured and are recovering under our supervision. To investigate the real and complete cause of the incident, a one-person inquiry commission has been constituted under the leadership of former Chief Justice Aruna Jagatheesan,” CM Stalin stated.

The Chief Minister has assured that the government will take further action based on the commission’s report. He has also stated to formulate some rules and regulations for conducting public events by consulting political parties afterwards.

“I assure you that the government will take all further action based on the commission’s report. No political party leader would ever wish for their followers or innocent civilians to die. When political parties and public organisations conduct such events, it is the duty of all of us to establish rules on how to act responsibly in the future. Accordingly, after receiving the Justice Commission’s report, I assure you that I will consult with all political parties and public organizations to formulate such rules and regulations,” Stalin added.
