Considering what has been a roller-coaster of an year for the Indian cricket team, picking the 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022 wasn’t exactly a bed of roses. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee made some debatable calls as the roster for the showpiece event in Australia was decided. Shreyas Iyer, one of the highest-scoring batters this year for India in the shortest format, only made it to the reserve list. Rishabh Pant, despite his poor form with the bat, was once again backed in the middle-order.
The selection calls weren’t taken entirely on the basis of statistics. The fact that Pant remains the only left-handed option in the middle-order seems to have worked in his favour. KL Rahul also remained the No. 1 choice as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner despite his poor run of form. More the form and performance, the Karnataka lad earned his spot on the basis of past results and potential.
If the selection was done purely on the basis of form and recent results, the Indian squad would’ve looked a lot different. But, statistically, who are the top Indian batters this year?
