The Supreme Court sought a report from the Karnataka High Court over some inflammatory remarks by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda at a recent hearing. Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan” and made a sexist remark against a woman lawyer while speaking during a landlord-tenant case.
With emphasis on framing clear guidelines on remarks of constitutional judges in the courts, a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices S Khanna, B R Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy felt it is all the more necessary to ensure that judges’ remarks don’t dent the decorum the courts are supposed to maintain as social media keeps on tracking and echo-ing courtroom proceedings.
Media Reports Highlighted Karnataka Judge’s Remark
Chief Justice Chandrachud said the media reports highlighted certain comments allegedly by a Karnataka High Court judge made during court proceedings. He requested the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting with its Chief Justice. He also said that the Supreme Court may evolve some sort of guidelines.
Chief Justice Chandrachud issued an order to file the complete report on Wednesday. The next hearing will take place on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, he made coarse remarks about the lady lawyer with whom he shared a platform, stating she knew so much about the “opposition party” that she even could reveal the colour of their undergarments.
