Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw just can’t stop scoring runs in domestic cricket. Shaw may have been getting ignored for the Indian team for undisclosed ‘off-field issues’ but he just keeps banging on the door of selection and soon it will open. Whether it’s T20s, List-A, or first-class cricket, Shaw is piling up runs left, right and centre and Wednesday, January 11 was one more step in that direction. Shaw continued his staggering form and slammed his maiden triple century against Assam in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
Shaw had already completed his double century on the first day but continued on to punish the Assam bowlers. Shaw reached his triple ton off just 326 balls, with the third century coming off just 91 balls. But, getting to 300 was just the start of the record-breaking outing for Shaw. Shaw then surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 340, Cheteshwar Pujara’s 352, VVS Laxman’s 353 and finally the second-best score in Ranji Trophy history – Sanjay Manjrekar’s 377. Manjrekar also had the highest score for Mumbai in the domestic tournament, before Shaw achieved both of them in his name.
Shaw’s knock has further strenghened his chances and the fans’ frustration knew no bounds. The fans asked if 379 was still not good enough, maybe a 500-plus can be that, or maybe a 700. Shaw has scored everywhere and anywhere whether for Mumbai, India A, or in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals. The reactions were more out of frustration to see a talent like Shaw being wasted rather than praising his knock, as he has been doing so rather consistently.
A user wrote, “Pick #PrithviShaw for the Aus series! Sit him down and sort out with him whatever other issues there may be, if any at all, but pick him! That’s it!”
Another user said that Shaw has given another reminder to the selectors, if they are indeed watching.
Shaw’s marathon knock helped Mumbai post a massive total of 687/4 with skipper Ajinkya Rahane scoring a well-compiled 191.
