Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has showered praise on India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra after the Olympic champion secured a podium finish in the 2022 edition of the World Athletics Championship on Sunday. The javelin superstar and Tokyo Games gold medallist secured India’s first-ever silver medal at the World Championships in Eugene. India’s only gold medallist in athletics at the Olympics, superstar Neeraj has become the country’s first male track and field athlete to win a medal in the World Championships.
Tributes poured in from around the nation as Neeraj ended India’s long wait for a medal at the World Athletics Championships. Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Modi lauded Neeraj for rewriting history in the world of athletics. Extending his best wishes on social media, PM Modi congratulated Neeraj on winning a historic silver medal at the World Championships.
“A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours,” PM Modi tweeted.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also hailed Neeraj for his exploits at the showpiece event. “India is elated by the stupendous performance by Subedar @Neeraj_chopra1. Congratulations to him on winning the Silver Medal at the #WorldAthleticsChampionships in Eugene, Oregon. His hard work, grit and determination have yielded outstanding results. We are proud of him,” the Defence Minister said in his tweet.
Neeraj produced a massive throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt to secure India’s first silver medal at the World Athletics Championships. Neeraj is the first male athlete to win a medal for India at the World Championships. Overall, the 24-year-old is the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. India’s Anju Bobby George won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships in Paris.
