Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be leaving T20I captaincy after today’s group stage fixture of T20 World Cup 2021 against Namibia. Kohli, who took over T20I captaincy in 2017, had announced the decision to step down a couple of months back and is all but set to be replaced by his deputy, Rohit Sharma. Kohli will continue to ply his trade in all formats and will be leading the national team in Tests and ODIs.
Like T20Is, should he step down as Test and ODI captain and continue as a player? Responding to the million-dollar query on Virugiri dot com, former India vice-captain Virender Sehwag shared his take.
Backing Kohli to continue as captain in two formats, Sehwag said: “This is Virat’s decision but I don’t think he should leave the other two formats’ captaincy. If he wants to play just as a player, it is his decision. I feel India are playing well under his captaincy. His records as a captain are superb. It’s his personal decision whether he wants to continue as the ODI and Test captain or not. According to me, he should lead India because he is a good player, a good captain who leads from the front.”
While he looks set to continue as the Test captain, it remains to be seen if the selectors name a new captain for ODIs or not. Rohit has been his deputy in ODIs too and will be his automatic replacement should the selectors name a new 50-over captain.
Kohli has so far led India in 49 T20Is. Under him, the Men in Blue have registered 29 wins and are highly likely to add another win in their account.
Kohli is likely to take a break following the ICC event and might not be part of the three T20Is against New Zealand. The two teams also square off in two Test matches in November-December.
