Rishabh Pant should forget he is Delhi Capitals captain: Ravi Shastri wants DC star to play his natural game

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri wants Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant to forget about his captaincy responsibilities which might have impacted his batting in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pant’s tactical acumen has been put to test in the 2022 edition of the cash-rich league. The Pant-led Delhi Capitals find themselves at the bottom half of the IPL 2022 points table after Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) handed DC their third defeat of the new season.
Runners-up in the 2022 edition of the world’s richest T20 league, Pant’s Delhi Capitals were desperate for two points when they squared off against Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match No.32 of the IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday. Speaking ahead of Delhi’s crucial game against Punjab, former Indian head coach Shastri urged Pant to stick with his natural game. Pant, who succeeded Shreyas Iyer as the leader of the Delhi Capitals franchise last season, is the second-highest scorer for the one-time IPL runners-up in the IPL 2022.
“What I would like to see with Delhi is Rishabh Pant coming and playing his natural game. Forgetting that he is the captain of the side, just let him go out and play his natural game. Let the others around him take the responsibility, because if he fires it will do his captaincy a world of good and at the same time you will see the results changing for Delhi Capitals pretty quickly,” Shastri told Star Sports.
Talking about Pant’s form, the former India head coach and ex-all-rounder called for a change of mindset. However, Shastri believes there are no issues with Pant’s batting. One of the biggest names in the cash-rich league, DC superstar Pant has smashed 144 runs from 5 matches so far this season. Under Pant’s leadership, eighth-placed Delhi Capitals have registered only two wins from five matches.
“I don’t think there is any problem with his batting. I think it’s just change of mind-set that is needed, where he goes out and gives himself a little bit of time early on and then goes for it. There are no half measures. The Rishabh Pant you know is Rishabh Pant where there are no half measures. He plays the high-risk shots, he takes his chances and you want him to play in that fashion because that’s what brings out the best in him,” Shastri concluded.
