Dhanush’s 2021 film Karnan directed by Mari Selvaraj came as a treat to the fans of the actor. The film was produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu under V creations and released across theatres on 9 April 2021. It was one of the most anticipated ventures by Dhanush and his fans.
Now, we have learned the OTT release date of Karnan from a popular OTT tracker. Apart from Dhanush, Karnan also stars Rajishya Vijayan, a Malayalam actress who made her Tamil debut, Yogi Babu, Lal, Natarajan Subramaniam, Gowri Kishan, Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli, GM Kumar and Shanmuga Rajan.
After the phenomenal success of Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Mari Selvaraj delivered yet another film that talks about the problems faced by oppressed class people. Unlike Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan’s treatment largely differed in terms of picturisation of catharsis. The film had a great theatrical run and collected well at the box office.
Today, popular OTT content analysis website Binged reported that Karnan will be premiered on 14 May 2021 via Amazon Prime Video. Right after the success of Pariyerum Perumal, the industry trackers were looking for Mari Selvaraj’s next film. Amidst expectations, Mari Selvaraj announced his next film with Dhanush in 2018.
The news went viral and expectations for the film began encroaching the Twitter spaces of hardcore Dhanush fans. In 2019 other important casting of Karnan was finalised including Rajishya Vijayan and Natarajan Subramaniam. By that time Dhanush was shooting for Karthik Subbaraj’s Jagame Thandiram produced by Shasikanth under Y Not Studios.
Dhanush successfully wrapped up Jagame Thanidram’s shooting and joined the sets of Karnan. The production of the film was done on an extensive scale.
Kalaipuli Thanu erected a large set to re-create a village to serve the purpose of the story. The film was based on the 1995 Kodyinkulam incident during which the valuables of hundreds of people in the village were destroyed by policemen.
After the film’s release, many media visited the Kodyinkulam and interviewed the people of that village. Karnan had many actors who are the residents of Kodyinkulam village itself. It is one of the very films that stayed authentic to its landscape, slang and people.
Dhanush’s performance as Karnan received accolades from the fans and critics. Other actors in the film including Lal, Yogi Babu, Lakshmipriya Chandramouli and Rajishya Vijayan also performed to carry the soul of the film. Karnan released after Dhanush was announced the Best actor, by the 67th National Film Awards jury, for Asuran (2019) directed by Vetri Maaran.
