Rapid digitisation under ‘iconic’ CJI Chandrachud boosted justice delivery system: SG Tushar Mehta

Hailing CJI D Y Chandrachud as the “iconic Chief Justice of India”, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta has said increased digitisation, use of artificial intelligence and machine learning by the higher judiciary under his leadership has boosted justice delivery across the country in a big way
SGI Mehta was speaking at an event organized by the American Bar Association (ABA) on the theme of ‘Law in the age of glocalisation’
“The judicial system under the very very able leadership and stewardship of our iconic Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has adopted digitization in the process of dispensing justice in a big way. One of the great examples is the digitization of entire court records, we have complete e-filing, there is no physical filing, most of the courts are paperless and the judiciary as an institution of judicial governance has utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning in their respective process,” he said
SC is also translating judgments and court documents into nine different languages. This is for the common man to know what the highest court is ruling to protect his Fundamental Rights”, said Mehta
“Online dispute resolution is growing with a special emphasis on resolving issues before the dispute occurs rather than after the dispute occurred”, the SG added.
On 2nd January SC also launched the eSCR, the official publication of the Supreme Court of India as a tribute to the nation.
With more than 34,000 judgments available online, the portal provides the facility to search judgments based on various parameters like phrases, words, all words, name of the Hon. Judge, Bench strength, volume, citation, date of decision etc.
The portal provides free access to the Supreme Court Reports, published from 1950 onwards. A total of 34,055 judgments have been uploaded so far in the English language.
As an upgrade to the eSCR, within just 4 weeks of the launch, on 26th January 2023, the Supreme Court of India released some new features on the eSCR portal.
To provide access to the Judgments in scheduled languages, the new feature provides translated versions of Supreme Court Judgments in Indian languages. So far 3132 judgments translated into Indian languages are available (Hindi- 2952, Tamil – 52, Malayalam- 29, Telugu – 28, Odia -21, Kannada- 17, Marathi-14, Assamese & Punjabi- 4 each, Nepali, Gujarati & Urdu- 3 each, Garo and Khasi – 1 each)
SC on February 21, 2023, also introduced on an experimental basis the live transcription of its proceedings. Copies of it are also being given to advocates of both parties
Mehta said India is a chosen destination as an economic powerhouse of the world. “We have our local manufacturers local products local services and we contribute globally as well ..so far as the economic powerhouse is concerned since 7 to 8 yrs there has been a remarkable jump in the Indian industrial sector with a special focus on ease of doing business.”
During the Covid pandemic when finances were draining from the rest of the countries of the world, India recorded maximum FDI.
“We have started digitization in a very big way. As a nation two remarkable schemes are digital India and start-up India Best part of globalisation, the best example of globalization was faced when we faced one of the biggest most serious kinds of global crises called Covid. Except for one or two countries no country had indigenous vaccines. India could produce two local vaccines…India gave 2.2 million doses to its citizens which is 2.5 times the total population of the USA and the European Union put together We believed in “vasudhaiva kutumbakam” that is world is our family..so we helped several nations with our locally manufactured vaccines. That is one of the marvellous examples of glocalisation”, the SGI said.
