Following Dalbir Kaur’s death on Sunday in Punjab, Randeep Hooda conducted her funeral services on Monday.
The actor had portrayed Sarabjit in his 2016 film Sarbjit, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had taken on the part of Dalbir Kaur. The biographical drama focused on Dalbir’s struggle to obtain justice for her brother, who had been executed by a Pakistani court after being found guilty of terrorism and espionage.
A Pakistani court gave the death sentence to Sarabjit Singh after finding him guilty of serving as an Indian spy there. Randeep and Dalbir grew close during the film’s production, and it was at that point that Dalbir asked for the actor to offer her kandha when she passed away since she recognised her brother in him.
When he heard of her passing, Randeep left Mumbai for her village right away. On Sunday, June 26, Dalbir passed away from a heart attack in Bhikhiwind, Punjab, not far from Amritsar. Randeep quickly made his way to the village to pay his respects and participate in the funeral ceremonies by lighting the fire.
Richa Chadha, Darshan Kumaar, and Omung Kumar all starred in the box office hit Sarbjit, which earned favourable reviews from critiques. After being attacked by other prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Sarbjit died in Lahore more than three years ago.
Dalbir had spoken about Randeep during a ceremony commemorating her brother’s passing three years prior: “I would like to tell Randeep that I have truly seen Sarabjit in him. I have a wish and I would like to take a promise from him that when I die, he should definitely give me kandha (shoulder). My soul will receive peace that Sarabjit gave me kandha.”
She had also said, “It was a matter of great joy that I found my brother Randeep. In the film, he is not just a hero, but also my brother.”
