Suriya’s film Soorarai Pottru received five significant accolades at the 68th National Awards, and superstar Rajinikanth was one of the several celebrities to wish him well. At the awards ceremony, the movie was named the Best Film of 2020, and Suriya and Ajay Devgn shared the Best Actor honour for Soorarai Pottru and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior respectively.
The Best Actress award went to Aparrna Balamurali for her work in Soorarai Pottru. Additionally, the movie was named Best Film and Best Original Screenplay. The fifth prize, for Best Background Music, went to GV Prakash, who fully earned it.
Rajinikanth tweeted, “#NationalFilmAwards My heartiest congratulations and appreciation to Surya @Suriya_offl who won the National Film Award, the film director and all the award-winning film artists.”
Apart from him, Dhanush and megastar Chiranjeevi also congratulated the Jai Bhim actor. Dhanush took to Twitter and wrote, ‘A big congratulations to all the national award winners. Especially @Suriya_offl sir and my good friend @gvprakash A big day for Tamil cinema. Super proud.’
Chiranjeevi wrote on his Twitter, “Hearty Congrats to my dearest @Suriya_offl on the National Best Actor Award!! It’s even more special coming on the eve of your birthday!! Many Many Happy Returns of the Day & Wishing you Many many more accolades along the way!!” he tweeted. Suriya replied, “Sir!!! Thank you so much.”
Suriya also sent gratitude to his fans on Twitter thanking them for their support and well wishes as he received his first national award in his career of 17 years. He wrote, “My love and ‘Thank You to all those who have encouraged my efforts so far and to my Amma & Appa, Karthi & Brinda, who have supported me always. I dedicate this award to my kids Diya and Dev and to my loving family.”
Soorarai Pottru, directed by Sudha Kongara, stars Suriya, Paresh Rawal, and Aparna Balamurali. It is based on the biography of Captain GR Gopinath, the man who founded Simplify Deccan.
