Rajat Kapoor, who enthralled the audience with Ankhon Dekhi, is back with his latest venture RK/RKay, starring himself and Mallika Sherawat in lead. Written and directed by Rajat, the comedy-drama narrates the story of a filmmaker named RK, who faces a unique dilemma when his film’s main character Mahboob goes missing from the rushes.
Over the years, Rajat’s penchant for distinctive subjects has been well established. Right from his maiden outing as a director, Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One, to his newest RK/RKay, Rajat has always come up with novel scripts.
In an exclusive interview with Times Now Digital, the actor-filmmaker opened up about the struggle to procure finance for the kind of cinema he likes to make. Despite earning massive accolades for his work and delivering a highly-acclaimed film like Ankhon Dekhi, Rajat still hasn’t found the support of major production houses of Bollywood.
Rajat revealed that for RK/RKay, he had to resort to crowdfunding to get to the desired budget. He told us, “For a film like RK/RKay, it is very hard to get regular producers. Even my last film Kadakh was independently produced. When we started looking for money for this one, things were not working out. So we started crowdfunding. People contributed Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1000 to up to Rs 1 lakh. A total of 800 people contributed like that.”
Nonetheless, Rajat added that he does not have any complaints whatsoever. “My thing is very clear, I have made a choice that I will make a certain kind of film. So I will have to live with its consequences. If you are making a film without big names, you will face difficulty in getting money and even getting it released. This is a fact. But I am very happy with the choices I make and the films I do,” Rajat added.
On a lighter note, Rajat quipped that it would have been easier finding producers if he had signed Mallika at the very beginning!
Meanwhile, the exciting star cast of RK/RKay also includes Ranvir Shorey, Kubbra Sait, Chandrachoor Rai, Waris Ahmed Zaidi, and Manu Rishi Chadha. It will arrive in cinemas on July 22.
