Rahul Gandhi unlikely to contest Congress’s presidential election: Sources

Rahul Gandhi is unlikely to contest the Congress party’s presidential election due next month, reported news agency ANI . Congress sources were reported as saying that Gandhi will not return to Delhi amidst his ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra.
The yatra is currently passing through Kerala and is slated to enter Karnataka on September 29. The over 3,700-km, 150-day yatra started on September 7 from Kanyakumari and will culminate in Jammu and Kashmir.
The last date to file the nomination for the Congress president’s post is September 30 and the election is due on October 17.
Earlier in the day, All India Congress Committee general secretary KC Venugopal called on Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and said only Rahul Gandhi would be able to confirm whether he will contest the election.
“Anybody can contest the elections for the post of Congress president, it’s free and fair. It will be transparent. Only Rahul Gandhi can decide and tell if he is contesting or not,” Venugopal stated.
Also today, the Jharkhand Congress state unit passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi the party president. However, shortly after, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said resolutions passed by Pradesh Congress Committees seeking Rahul Gandhi to head party are not binding.
