Former Lok Sabha MP and Kannada actor Divya Spandana said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had helped her and supported her emotionally when she was battling suicidal thoughts following her father’s demise and electoral defeat.
Spandana, who earlier served as MP from Karnataka’s Mandya and Congress social media head, said that Rahul Gandhi was one of the biggest influences in her life.
Talking about her father’s death and her struggle with suicidal thoughts, the actor-politician said that she attended Parliament proceedings two weeks after she lost her father and that she did not know anyone or anything.
“I gradually learned about everything and channeled my grief towards my work. People of Mandya gave me the confidence,” she was quoted as saying by Pinkvilla in an episode of the Kannada talk show Weekend with Ramesh Season 5.
Talking about coping with suicidal thoughts, the former Congress MP said Rahul Gandhi supported her emotionally when her father died. “My mother is the biggest influence in my life, next is my father, and the third is Rahul Gandhi,” she added.
Spandana said she was thinking of killing herself after her father’s death and that she had faced defeat in the election. “During that time, Rahul Gandhi helped me and supported me emotionally too,” she said.
Divya Spandana joined the Youth Congress in 2012. She successfully contested the by-election to the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka in 2013. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, she again contested from Mandya but was defeated by CS Puttaraju by a margin of 5,500 votes.
She served as the social media head of the Congress but later resigned from the post.
