Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over a high level virtual open debate of the UNSC on the topic – ‘enhancing maritime security – a case for international cooperation’, said MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Thursday.
‘On August 9 evening IST, PM will preside over a high level virtual open debate of the UNSC on the topic enhancing maritime security – a case for international cooperation under the agenda item maintenance of international peace and security,” ANI quoted the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson as saying.
He further said that this would be the first time that an Indian Prime Minister would be presiding over a meeting of the UN Security Council.
India is currently holding the presidency of UNSC for August. As part of our presidency, we are organising signature events, as they are called, on three focus areas, that we have chosen – maritime security, peacekeeping operations and counter-terrorism, Bagchi added.
The UN Security Council, under the Presidency of India, will meet on Friday to discuss the worsening security situation in Afghanistan.
The decision to hold the open UNSC briefing on Afghanistan comes just a day after Afghanistan Foreign Minister Mohammed Haneef Atmar spoke with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar “to discuss convening an emergency UN Security Council Session” on Afghanistan.
“UN #SecurityCouncil will meet on Friday, 6th August, under Indian Presidency to discuss and take stock of the situation in #Afghanistan,” India’s Permanent Representative to UN and Security Council President for the month of August Ambassador T S Tirumurti tweeted late on Wednesday.
