Picture perfect! Eldery man bows down to Virat Kohli as ex-skipper celebrates elusive 71st century

1021 days and it finally happened. After an agonizing wait of almost three years, Virat Kohli finally registered his 71st international century on Thursday (September 8) and equalled Ricky Ponting’s record to become the batter with the joint most centuries in international cricket history. Only Sachin Tendulkar (100) has more tons than Kohli in the history of the sport across formats.
The knock against Afghanistan was also Kohli’s maiden ton in T20I cricket. His innings of 122 saw him register the highest score ever by an Indian batter in the shortest format at the international level. Through the course of his knock, the ex-Indian skipper hit 12 boundaries and six sixes.
While Kohli’s breathtaking array of shots reminded fans of his best days as he played a vintage knock, it was his celebration that won the hearts of fans. After lifting his bat in a shy manner, Kohli kissed his wedding ring and dedicated the ton to his wife Anushka Sharma. While Kohli was celebrating his ton, an eldery Indian fan in the stands was seen bowing down to him in a video that went viral on social media and has won the hearts of cricket fans across the nation.
Following the ton, Kohli explained his celebration and explained how Anushka helped him through his tough phase and put the sport in perspective. He also spoke about the importance of taking a break which has allowed me to enjoy the game again.
“I kissed my ring. You see me standing here because one person has put things in perspective for me. That’s Anushka. This hundred is for her and for our little daughter Vamika as well. When you have someone next to you having conversations putting things in perspective, like Anushka has been… when I came back I was not desperate. Six weeks off I was refreshed. I realised how tired I was. Competitiveness doesn’t allow it, but this break allowed me enjoy the game again,” said Kohli to Star Sports.
India have failed to reach the final of the Asia Cup and the Kohli-starrer side will be next seen in action in a three-match home ODI series against Australia starting on September 20.
