Peeved over MLC ticket denial, Karnataka woman Congress leader asks ‘why 50% of population being ignored’

Upset over being denied a ticket for the upcoming biennial election to seven seats of Karnataka Legislative Council, state’s Congress general secretary Kavitha Reddy has vented out her ire against the party, saying that it was “unfair and disturbing” when 50 per cent of the population is ignored.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Reddy wrote, “All men who get MLA/MP ticket will not win, so winnability question is only for women? Men with all resources also have lost elections, but the question on resources is only for women? Social justice is irrelevant/incomplete without gender justice!”
“Why is Indian National Congress ignoring 50 per cent of the population? Is there no representation for women in our Assembly, Council, or Parliament at all? Is it no entry for women?” the post read.
The biennial election to seven seats of Karnataka Legislative Council, to be elected by the members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), is scheduled to be held on June 3. The counting of votes will be done at 5 pm that day.
She also said that the Karnataka Congress has not given women representation in the legislative council for the third consecutive.
“It’s extremely unfair and disturbing when 50 per cent of the population is ignored. For the third time in a row, the Karnataka Congress has not given women representation in the legislative council,” Reddy said in a self-made video
“When men get so many opportunities why not women? Don’t they represent leadership in the Congress party? When women are not given an opportunity how do you expect them to grow? Hope correction will be done,” she added.
The Congress on Monday announced M Nagaraju Yadav and K Abdul Jabbar as its candidates for the biennial election
The election is necessitated as the term of office of seven members expires on June 14. The seats will be falling vacant due to the retirement of MLCs — Laxman Sangappa Savadi and Lahar Singh Siroya of BJP; Ramappa Timmapur, Allum Veerabhadrappa, Veena Achaiah S of Congress; and H M Ramesha Gowda and Narayana Swamy K V of JD(S).
