At a time when the cricket fraternity is congratulating Ab de Villiers for a fantastic career, former India pacer Parvinder Awana has caused a furor within cricket fans for his post on the retirement of the South African legend.
While Awana expressed gratitude to de Villiers’ for his service to the sport, he attached a video of himself dismissing the former South Africa captain in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game a few years back.
Awana took to Twitter to post a video of him uprooting de Villiers’ stumps with the caption, “Thank you AB de Villiers for your contribution to cricket.” Cricket fans were quick to take notice of the post and trolled Awana for posting the video on the day he retired from the sport.
Awana used a clip from an IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings. de Villiers was trying to hit a scoop shot to Awana for a six but missed the ball and was bowled. He had hit a six of the previous delivery.
Awana played two games for India in a T20I series against England at home in 2012. He did not take a single wicket in either game and conceded runs at an extremely high economy rate of 11.83.
Awana played for the Punjab Kings in the IPL from 2012 to 2014. His impressive performances in the 2012 season in which he took 17 wickets in 12 games had earned him an India call-up.
Awana had another productive season for the franchise in 2013 with a tally of 15 wickets in 14 games. However, in 2014, he played just 7 games in which he took 7 wickets.
Since the 2014 season, he has never featured in the cash-rich league again. He last played any form of domestic cricket for the Delhi State team in 2016 and announced his retirement from the sport in 2018.
