Pakistan: TTP Militants Attack Frontier Corps Post In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, One Soldier Killed

In a fresh wave of violence, five militants from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) launched a coordinated assault on a Frontier Corps (FC) post in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack, which took place on Monday, resulted in a prolonged gun battle that left one Frontier Corps personnel dead. All five attacking militants were also killed in the exchange of fire.

The Bannu attack serves to underscore the ongoing and increasing threat from the TTP and its affiliates in unstable Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along the Afghan border. The attack is the latest of a number of fatal attacks on security personnel in Pakistan. During the past few months, the area has seen a number of major attacks, such as a North Waziristan suicide attack that resulted in 16 military deaths and a Bajaur roadside bomb that killed five officers.

Islamabad Retaliates With Counter-Terror Operations

Pakistan’s military has been waging a steady campaign against the TTP. In early August, Pakistan conducted pinpoint drone and missile attacks on TTP camps in Afghanistan, reportedly in cooperation with the Afghan Taliban. The operations caused significant deaths among the militants. In the wake of the recent attack, the government is likely to adopt a tight cordon on the Bannu region and deploy reinforcements, with intelligence-driven retaliation expected in the tribal region. The attack indicates that even after consistent counter-terror efforts, the TTP threat is still strong.
