Over to you: When MS Dhoni allowed Virat Kohli to score winning run in T20 WC semifinal against SA

India and South Africa will square off in a T20I for the 9th time this year and lock horns in their 3rd game of the 2022 T20 World Cup. With 2 wins from as many matches, India sit at the top spot in the points table. SA have 1 win from 2 matches and follow the Men in Blue. The winning side of today’s contest will finish the day at the top spot.
India and South Africa have squared off in countless memorable fixtures over the years. But one that probably tops the list is the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final contest between the two teams. The match is best remembered for MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s bromance.
Dhoni, who was leading the team in the tournament, allowed Kohli to do the honours and finish off the game. Chasing a big of 173, India rode on Kohli’s masterclass to come close to winning. And with just 1 run needed off 7 balls, Dhoni played a dot ball.
Regarded as the best finisher for India, Dhoni could have easily scored the winning run. But with one over and 6 wickets in hand, the captain decided to let Kohli finish the job. Dhoni’s decision did leave Kohli a bit surprised while those in the dugout shared a laugh.
Kohli completed the chase with a boundary off Dale Steyn on the first ball of the 20th over. The win propelled India into their 2nd final. The Men in Blue were favourites going into the contest but lost to Sri Lanka. Kohli was bestowed with the Player of the Tournament award.
In 2016, India once again cleared the league stage and made it to the semi-final. Playing in home conditions, India lost to eventual champions, West Indies, in the semi-final. This year, India have emerged as a strong contender and are expected to make it to the semi-finals with ease.
