The Prime Minister Internship Scheme portal saw an overwhelming response on its first day, with 1,55,109 candidates registering, according to government sources. Announced in this year’s budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the scheme aims to tackle youth unemployment by linking young job seekers with companies in need of talent.
Participation from Leading Companies and Key Sectors
So far, 193 companies, including major firms like Jubilant Foodworks, Maruti Suzuki India, Larsen & Toubro, Muthoot Finance, and Reliance Industries, have posted internship opportunities in the Prime Minister Internship Scheme portal. The initiative spans multiple sectors such as Oil, Gas & Energy, Travel & Hospitality, Automotives, and Banking.
Addressing Opposition Criticism on Unemployment
The government has faced criticism from opposition parties on the issue of unemployment. Through this scheme, the government aims to offer young people opportunities to gain work experience and respond to these concerns. A government source mentioned that the scheme serves as “a bridge between companies seeking talent and youth in search of opportunities.”
Internships Across Multiple Sectors and Locations
The internships are available in 24 sectors and more than 20 fields, including operations, production, maintenance, and sales. Opportunities are spread across 737 districts in 37 states and union territories, offering a wide range of options for young job seekers.
Skill Development and Long-Term Employment Opportunities
The scheme is not just about short-term internships. Many top companies are offering positions that aim to address skill gaps and create long-term employment opportunities in India’s growing industries. The government’s efforts are viewed as an attempt to reduce unemployment and build a more skilled workforce.
