‘Our domestic level is not that great’: Harmanpreet Kaur explains why Women’s IPL is need of the hour

The Women’s Indian Premier League is set to become a reality now, after reports emerged that the BCCI have set a seperate four-week long window in March 2023 after the 2023 ICC Women’s World Cup. There have been rumours of six teams being part of the WIPL, and a lot of potential investors being interested to buy franchises in the league.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur feels that the Women’s IPL will be a great platform for the Indian domestic players to showcase their talent on an international stage since the domestic structure of women’s cricket in the country is not that great.
“Yes, definitely, I think that is a great platform where domestic players can perform and get that experience. The only thing I personally feel we are lacking is that because our domestic level is not that great and suddenly you are coming to the Indian team and then you feel a lot of pressure,” Harmanpreet Kaur said in an interaction with Sports 18.
She also feels that the Women’s IPL will allow the domestic players to rub shoulders with some of the greatest names in international cricket.
“I feel if we get women’s IPL, then our domestic players will also get a chance to play with overseas players and that experience will definitely help us when some youngster, who is coming to the team, will not feel that pressure which eventually they feel when they come and play international games,” Harmanpreet added.
Harmanpreet Kaur also shared her positive experiences of playing in other foreign leagues like the BBL. “When you get a chance to play other leagues, it really helps you. Personally, these things really helped me, it helps to boost your confidence. You get a chance to play with overseas players, you share your experience with them, you learn a lot from them,” she added.
The Indian women’s cricket team created history at the Commonwealth Games as they clinched the silver medal, thus earning India’s first medal in cricket at the CWG. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur said that it was a tremendous experience at the tournament.
“It was a great experience for all of us because we were participating for the first time and we got a great platform to perform. I am really happy with the way we performed because before leaving for the Commonwealth Games we decided to play dominating cricket and the team did a really great job,” she said.
