Opposing a party or an individual should not turn against country: PM’s indirect taunt to Opposition amid ruckus in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi,  made a reference to the Indira Gandi-imposed ‘Emergency’ and said that when the country’s democracy was crushed during the time, ‘all the major parties came together and fought to save the Constitution’. Addressing a program marking the 10th death anniversary of late Harmohan Singh Yadav, PM Modi also took a jibe at the Opposition and said that opposing a party or an individual should not turn against the country.
“In 1971, during the Indo-Pakistan war, all the political parties stood by the government. But when Emergency was imposed, all major parties came together to save the Constitution,” PM Modi said during the virtual event.

In an indirect reference to the Opposition, which has been protesting against various issues in the Parliament, PM said that it is the responsibility of every political party that opposing a party or an individual should not turn against the country. “Ideologies have their own place but, country is first, society is first, nation is first,” PM said.
“There is a trend that ideologies and political interests are being put ahead of nation and society. For us, society is our culture and nature,” PM said. His reference comes at a time when the Parliament has witnessed repeated disruptions and adjournments due to Opposition protests demanding discussion on price rise, GST and other issues.
On a separate note, PM Modi also said that today is a very big day for demcracy as a woman from tribal community has sworn-in as the President of India. “Today is a very big day for our democracy as the new President has been sworn in. For the first time after independence, a woman from tribal community is going to lead our country,” PM said.
