‘One marriage for all’: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan vows to bring Uniform Civil Code

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, announced  the formation of a committee to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the statement and remarked, “Now a uniform civil code should be established across India.”
The chief minister made the remarks while addressing a political rally in Barwani. He said, “a time has come for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. In Madhya Pradesh, I am forming a committee (to implement UCC). Only one marriage for everyone.”
The Uniform Civil Code, which is part of Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, intends to implement personal laws that would apply to all citizens equally, regardless of religion, gender, caste, or other factors.
The Uniform Civil Code is a set of regulations that govern personal concerns such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA and a working member of the Muslim Personal Law Board, Arif Masood said that all this was just a political election-time gimmick.
He said, “Shivraj Singh Chouhan should answer that when there is a separate law regarding tribals, there is a separate law in North East India; in such a situation, how will they implement the Uniform Civil Code? This is being done to hurt the Muslim Personal Law. The government is doing such stunts to hide corruption and its wrong policies.”
Currently, Goa is the only state in India with a functioning and implemented UCC. However, Chouhan’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has promised the same in Gujarat as well ahead of the polls.
Uttarakhand CM, Pushkar Singh Dhami had also promised the same ahead of the polls in his state earlier this year. He confirmed at the recently concluded Times Now Summit that the process is underway and they will likely implement UCC in Uttarakhand in the next six months.
