Congress leader Shobha Oza resigned as chairperson of Madhya Pradesh Women’s Commission, alleging that the BJP government was not allowing her to work. In her resignation letter to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Oza said that the state government was denying justice to thousands of women by trying to dissolve the executive.
Oza claimed that the commission’s rights were taken away and she was not able to do anything for women’s safety, respect and rights. “Shivraj government is playing with women’s safety by paralyzing the state women’s commission,” she said in a tweet.
In a press conference, the Congress leader said that she was supposed to be the commission chairperson till March 2023. “But the present government has snatched away all the rights associated with this post. In view of this situation, I have sent my resignation to CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, so that I can fight for the rights of women as before,” she said.
Oza was appointed as MPWC chairperson in March 2020 by the then chief minister Kamal Nath. However, his government fell days later and the BJP came to power. After coming to power, the BJP government cancelled Oza’s appointment. However, she moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which directed the government to maintain the status quo.
Oza alleged that despite the court’s order, the state government did not allow her to work, locked the doors of the office and told officials and employees to leave the office whenever she attended it, according to PTI.
MP BJP spokesperson Neha Bagga said Oza should have quit soon after the Congress government fell in 2020. And by not doing so, she said, Oza did injustice to the large number of women whose cases are pending before the commission.
