Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposed move away from Manchester United has seen many fantasize about Lionel Messi’s possible arrival into the Premier League. While many fans have been discussing a hypothetical move from Manchester United for the Paris Saint-Germain forward, former Manchester City defender Danny Mills doesn’t think that such a move is practical.
Mills, who is now a football pundit, even went on to say that not just Manchester United but none of the Premier League top 6 would want to bring Messi to their club at this stage of his career.
Though Mills branded Messi as the greatest footballer he has ever seen play, he doesn’t feel the Argentine would be welcomed by England’s top clubs now.
“Would you take Lionel Messi? He’s the greatest footballer I’ve ever seen, I didn’t see [Johan] Cruyff live or [Diego] Maradona,” Mills said on talkSport.
“Messi is the best footballer that I’ve ever seen. I know Ronaldo’s numbers are a little better and he’s more of a big-game player.
“In terms of being a footballer, Messi is the greatest, but would you take Messi in your team now? Probably not.
“I don’t think they [the Premier League’s top six] would take him. Liverpool? No. Man City? No. Tottenham? No. I don’t think they would.”
Messi only scored 11 goals across competitions for PSG last season. In comparison, Ronaldo racked up 24 goals for Manchester United. But, with the Portuguese keen on a move away from Old Trafford, the hunt for his replacement at United has already begun.
Messi had joined PSG last summer after Barcelona had failed to extend his contract owing to a huge financial crisis. The 35-year-old himself wanted to stay with the Catalan giants but La Liga’s regulations meant that the club could no longer register him as a player.
Since joining PSG, Messi hasn’t looked at his absolute best. Though there are suggestions that the 2022-23 season will be one of Messi’s strongest, we still have to wait for that prediction to come true.
