A video of Taliban’s new Minister of Education, Sheikh Molvi Noorullah Munir has gone viral on social media in which he was seen mocking the importance of higher education.
“No Phd degree, master’s degree is valuable today. You see that the Mullahs and Taliban that are in the power, have no Phd, MA or even a high school degree, but are the greatest of all,” Munir said the video.
The remark has invited immense backlash of several social media users.
The Taliban on Tuesday unveiled a hardline interim government led by Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, weeks after seizing power in Afghanistan.
While the insurgent group which has returned to power in Afghanistan after two decades is making attempts to portray a more moderate image than during their rule 20 years ago, the claims have been questioned after the announcement of key figures in the caretaker government.
The Taliban sealed military victory in war-torn Afghanistan on August 15, dethroning the Ashraf Ghani- led previous elected leadership which was backed by the West.
Mullah Hasan, the chief of the Taliban’s powerful decision-making body ‘Rehbari Shura’, has been named as the Acting Prime Minister while Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar will be his deputy in the “new Islamic government”.
The 33-member Cabinet, which has no woman member, include several high-profile leaders of the insurgent group, including Sirajuddin Haqqani, a specially designated global terrorist of the dreaded Haqqani Network.
Haqqani, who is the son of famous anti-Soviet warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani who founded Haqqani Network, is the new acting interior minister
