Virat Kohli, in all likelihood, will make his comeback for India in the upcoming Asia Cup T20 tournament. The 2022 edition of the premier Asian tournament was initially supposed to take place in Sri Lanka, but after they announced their inability to host the six-team event, it has now been shifted to the United Arab Emirates. The change in venue was announced a few days back by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.
India are the defending champions and have won the last editions of both the 50 and 20-over formats of the tournament. This year, serving as a buildup to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the tournament will take place in the T20I format.
Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who has been struggling to score big runs for quite some time now, will return to play for India after opting out of the ongoing West Indies tour. The right-handed batter asked for a rest after the England series and is currently spending quality time with his family in Paris
The 33-year-old is having a forgetful 2022 as after a below-par IPL 2022 season, he was unable to leave a mark in the all-format series against England as well. In six innings, he could only contribute 76 runs. Virat’s last hundred in international cricket was 32 months back in November 2019 against Bangladesh, and since then he has struggled for big individual totals.
Due to his poor recent run, many former greats and cricket experts have questioned Virat’s place in the Indian line-up as well, but the ace cricketer has made his intentions clear of giving everything to the best of his abilities as he has hinted towards his return for the big tournament next month.
Virat, who is the sixth highest run getter in Asia Cup history, missed the last edition of the tournament in 2018 when it was played in the UAE and India won it under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. But this time, he’s all set to make an appearance and make it count.
The 33-year-old also promised to give his best to help the Indian side win the upcoming tournament as well as the 2023 World Cup, which will be hosted by India. “My main aim is to help India win the Asia Cup and the World Cup, and for that I am ready to do anything for the team,” Kohli said in a statement released by Star Sports.
According to reports, the high-octane clash between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup T20 tournament will take place on August 28. It will be the first time since last year’s T20 World Cup match that these two arch-rivals will come up against each other.
