Must Build A New Bangladesh Where All Religions…’: Tarique Rahman In Dhaka

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman  called for building a “new Bangladesh” rooted in unity and mutual respect among all religious communities. Recalling the country’s struggle for independence in 1971 and the mass movement witnessed in August 2024, Rahman said people must come together to safeguard national sovereignty and shape an inclusive future for the country.

Addressing a public rally, Tarique said in his speech that he has a plan to make the country better.

He said, “Whether men, women or children, protecting Bangladesh’s peace and dignity must always be our top priority. We will work together and build our Bangladesh.”

Appeal For Peace And Non-Violence

In his speech, Tarique said his wish is that every citizen of Bangladesh remains safe. He urged people to avoid violence and contribute together to building the nation.

Referring to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Rahman said, “We must protect peace in Bangladesh at all costs. I have a plan for my countrymen.”

Martin Luther King Jr. was a renowned American Baptist minister, civil rights activist, and leader of the non-violent movement. He is often called the Gandhi of America, as he drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence while fighting racial discrimination and segregation against African Americans.

Who Is Tarique Rahman?

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, has returned to the country after a 17-year absence. He had fled to London in 2008 to avoid arrest, when several corruption cases were pending against him under the Hasina government.

More than 100,000 workers of his party, the BNP, gathered to welcome him today. He delivered a 17-minute speech, during which he said they would ensure peace in the country and build a new Bangladesh.

Political Significance Of Rahman’s Return

Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh after 17 years is being seen as a significant moment in the country’s politics. The 60-year-old acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is widely viewed as a leading contender to emerge as the country’s next leader ahead of the February 12 elections next year.

His return comes amid a political vacuum following the resignation and exile of Sheikh Hasina to India after student-led protests in July last year. A survey conducted this month by the US-based International Republican Institute suggests the BNP could make major gains and is likely to secure the largest number of parliamentary seats in the upcoming polls.
