Virat Kohli’s resignation as Test captain has left the cricketing world shocked as it was a decision not many saw coming. Despite him leaving the T20I captaincy and being sacked as ODI captain in the last few months, most people expected him to continue leading in red-call cricket in the near future.
Following Kohli’s announcement on Saturday, reactions have quickly poured in from across the globe with many in the cricket fraternity paying tribute to his extraordinary service as Indian captain in red-ball cricket.
Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma has become the latest to react and wrote a heartwarming tribute to the Indian batter’s contribution as the captain of the Indian team and recalled his seven-year journey in the top job
In her post, Anushka recalled a conversation the couple had with MS Dhoni following Kohli’s appointment as captain in Test cricket in 2014. The famous Bollywood actress remembered a hilarious joke Dhoni made in the conversation that happened in the backdrop of his retirement from the longest format.
Anushka wrote, “I remember the day in 2014 when you told me that you have been made the captain as MS had decided to retire from test cricket.
“I remember MS, you & I having a chat later that day & him joking about how quickly your beard will start turning grey. We all had a good laugh about it.”
Kohli took charge of the Indian Test team on a permanent basis from the fourth Test of India’s tour to Australia in 2014/15 in which Dhoni retired from Test cricket after the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Earlier in the opening game of the same series at Adelaide, Kohli had led India for the first time in Test cricket as Dhoni missed the game due to a thumb injury.
While India lost Kohli’s first game in charge, he has ended his tenure as the Test skipper as India’s most successful skipper in the longest format with 40 wins in 68 games.
