The union cabinet recently gave Marathi the status of a classical language and actor Vaibhav Tatwawadi, who was recently seen in ‘A Wedding Story’, calls it a huge honour. As an actor, he agrees that it’s very important for regional languages like Marathi to receive such recognition.
“Marathi is an ancient language, and this recognition was long overdue. In terms of progress, Marathi cinema and theatre are already moving in the right direction, and this announcement will help boost both fields further,” he said, and added, “I also feel this will encourage Marathi representation in mainstream cinema. Marathi has always had a presence in the narratives of Indian films and this recognition will only strengthen that presence.” Vaibhav also mentions that the recognition “will help Marathi literature reach a wider audience.”
The actor further mentions that the recognition holds so much value for the people of Maharashtra. “It’s an absolute honor for all Maharashtrians that Marathi has been recognised as a classical language. This request has been pending for a long time, and I am truly glad that it has finally happened. It’s a very proud moment for all of us.”
Vaibhav also believes that the news is monumental, especially for the younger generation of Maharashtra, who will take more pride in their mother tongue. He added, “They will be more eager to learn and embrace Marathi, knowing it has been recognised as a classical language by our government.”
For the unversed, Vaibhav has been an integral part of the Marathi film industry. Though he created a name through Hindi films, it was a Marathi project Fakta Ladh Mhana that marked his acting debut. Post that, he went on to feature is several other Marathi films such as Kurukshetra, Surajya, Coffee Ani Barach Kahi, Cheater, Kanha and more.
