A huge search operation is underway in Manipur, to track down the militants after fresh violence in Jiribam district that left at least five people dead. The violence involved drone and rocket attacks. Security agencies have seized huge amounts of weapons in a major arms seizure. Tension has been high in the state since ethnic violence erupted in May last year.

These include sniper rifles, pistols, guns, mortars, grenades, and rocket bombs, among other ammunitions. After the attack, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh held an emergency meeting with the ruling coalition MLAs. He also met with Governor L Acharya to update the latter about the state’s security situation.

High-Security Alert In Manipur

High-security alert is in place in Manipur after violence on Saturday left five people dead. A military helicopter is patrolling and conducting an aerial survey. A search operation is underway. The situation is under control now, said Inspector General of Police, Intelligence, K Kabib.

Manipur Police further mentioned that Kuki militants attacked two areas in the Bishnupur district with long-range rockets aimed at civilian locations. This incident occurred after the militant entered a solitary dweller’s house and killed him in his sleep, thus aggravating the situation.

Forces Recovered Many Weapons

The operating forces recovered many advanced weapons, ammunition, explosives, and grenades from the continued search operation. According to the officials, the recovered arms and ammunition included nine advanced weapons, 21 types of ammunition, 21 explosives and grenades along with a wireless set.

The security forces demolished three militant bunkers in the Churachandpur district after the insurgents fired rockets into the nearby Bishnupur area, killing one and injuring six persons. Three bodies of armed militants were recovered in Jiribam district.

There was also an attempt to steal weapons from Manipur Rifles at two sites, but security forces stationed there broke up the mob and foiled the theft. Some vehicles belonging to the attackers were also damaged, officials said.
