The President’s rule imposed in Manipur has been extended for the next six months with effective from August 13, 2025. The president’s rule was initially imposed on February 13, 2025 following CM N. Biren Singh’s resignation amidst the ethnic violence in the state. The resolution for its extension was introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Bulletin said that Amit Shah, who is the Home and Cooperation Minister, gave notice of a motion which was approved. The motion states that Parliament’s approval should be obtained to extend the President’s proclamation implemented in Manipur under Article 356 of the Constitution on February 13, 2025, for the next six months from August 13, 2025.

How Far Can The President’s Rule Be Extended?

According to Article 356 (3) of the Constitution, President’s rule is imposed on the recommendation of the Governor, and it is initially effective for six months, which can be extended every six months to a maximum of three years with the approval of Parliament.

Ethnic tensions and violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023 have claimed more than 250 lives and displaced more than 60,000 people.

The state’s main highways, National Highways 2 and 37, which connect the Imphal Valley with Nagaland and Assam, pass through Kuki-Zo-dominated areas. Movement of Meitei people on these routes has been disrupted since May 2023. Also, more than 6,000 police weapons have been stolen in the state.
