Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya laughed off the national ambitions of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and asserted that there is no alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vijayvargiya also dismissed Congress as an opponent and said its leadership would be questioned in the wake of its poor results in the recently-concluded Assembly elections.
Congress faced a crushing defeat in all of the five states in the Assembly polls and even failed to retain power in Punjab.
While speaking to media, the BJP leader said, “After Congress’ defeat, their leadership will be questioned. There is no one in the opposition right now to give competition to BJP or Modi Ji.”
“I don’t think people of the country will see any alternative to Modi Ji in 2024,” he asserted.
When asked about TMC’s push projecting Mamata Banerjee as a PM candidate for 2024, Vijayvargiya said, “West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is not able to run her own state peacefully, how can we imagine her to run the country.”
Earlier on Friday, Mamata, referring to the results of the recently concluded Assembly elections in five states where Congress faced humiliating defeat, said, “All political polities that want to fight BJP should walk together. Congress is losing their credibility, can’t depend on Congress.”
Responding to her statement, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury slammed Mamata for questioning the Congress party presence across India.
“Not right to respond to a mad person. Congress has 700 MLAs across India. Does Didi have it? Congress has 20 per cent of the Opposition’s total vote share. Does she have it? She’s saying this to please BJP and act as its agent. She says things like this to stay relevant,” he said.
