Taking the fight to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s bastion, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee addressed booth-level TMC workers on Tuesday and exhorted that she can never forget Nandigram. While rejecting the “outsider” tag in Nandigram, the TMC chief took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying she was amazed as those coming from Gujarat have become insiders in Bengal
Notably, Nandigram is considered to be BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s home turf, who in a public rally had challenged ‘Didi’ to contest against him in Nandigram. The TMC turncoat has announced that if he is not able to defeat the TMC supremo by 50,000 votes, he will quit politics.
Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Nandigram: Highlights
- Addressing TMC supporters, Banerjee hit out at BJP and accused it of trying to divide people on communal lines.
- Divisive politics will not work in Nandigram.
- Responding to Adhikari’s ‘guest’ jibe against her, Banerjee launched a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying, “I am an outsider for some for whom those coming from Gujarat are insiders. Those calling me an outsider in Nandigram are outsiders themselves.”
- I can never forget Nandigram. I decided to contest West Bengal election from Nandigram due to people’s response.
- Bhulte Pari Sobar Naam, Bhulbo Nako Nandigram (I can forget everyone’s name but I will never forget Nandigram)…When I had first visited Nandigram, there was no MLA. I looked at these faces and decided to contest from here. I had my home constituency and it was Bhawanipore. There was no problem and the effort would have been less for me. But still I chose Nandigram as I could see your love and enthusiasm.
- I had made up my mind that I will contest from either Singur or Nandigram this time.
- I will be holding two rallies in Nandigram soon.
- Those who are playing Hindu, Muslim politics must know that I am also a Hindu girl.
- She accused Adhikari of trying to incite communal passions. Banerjee said some people are talking about 70:30 ratio (of Hindu- Muslim population). Those doing that are insulting the sacred Nandigram movement which people of both communities fought together. People of Nandigram will make BJP ‘April fool’ on April 1 when polling is held.
Mamata to file nomination from Nandigram on March 10
This is the first rally of Banerjee in Nandigram after TMC announced that she would contest the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021 from the particular constituency. It may be noted that the Nandigram assembly segment will see the most fierce battle of the Bengal polls as Adhikari has been pitted against Banerjee.
Mamata Banerjee will file her nomination for the Nandigram assembly constituency seat on March 10.
West Bengal elections will be held in eight phases starting from March 27. Nandigram constituency will witness the election on April 1, 2021. The West Bengal election results will be announced on May 2.
