Maharashtra Assembly Speaker on Monday suspended 12 BJP MLAs for one year after they reportedly created ruckus inside the House. According to reports, they manhandled Presiding Officer Bhaskar Jadhav during the ongoing Assembly session.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution urging the Central government to provide the 2011 census data to enable the State Backward Class Commission to prepare empirical data of the OBC population in the state.
The resolution was passed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in a bid to restore political reservations for its members in local bodies.
The resolution was moved by NCP leader and state minister Chhagan Bhujbal and passed by voice vote amid uproar by the BJP MLAs inside the House.
According to reports, when Presiding Officer Bhaskar Jadhav put the resolution for vote, few BJP members climbed up the Speaker’s podium and argued with the Chair.
The House was adjourned after the incident and when it resumed, Shiv Sena and NCP alleged that BJP members “misbehaved” with the Presiding Officer and manhandled him in the Speaker’s chamber.
It was then the Speaker suspended 12 BJP MLAs for a year for creating ruckus inside the Assembly and misbehaving with the Presiding Officer.
While speaking to media at the session’s end, Chhagan Bhujbal said, “BJP is asking for power to implement OBC reservation in the state within three months. Why didn’t they implement it when they were in power for 5 years?”
Talking about the incident in the House, he said, “Assembly Session was adjourned after ruckus following the use of abusive language against Assembly Speaker. The Incident has been captured in the CCTV.”
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis stressed that BJP members did not misbehave with anyone inside the House and that the MVA govt is giving a new twist to stop House proceedings.
Fadnavis announced that BJP will boycott the ongoing Assembly session in Maharashtra.
Later in the day, the BJP MLAs, who were suspended reached Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in Mumbai.
