Nine individuals have been arrested after a mob vandalized the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata during the early hours . The unrest occurred during a protest against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the premises last week.
Women Reclaim the Night Vigil Turns Chaotic
The protest followed a vigil organized by women in Kolkata and across the country, under the banner “Women, Reclaim the Night.” The vigil began around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, but escalated when some individuals stormed the hospital premises, attacking vehicles and damaging public property. The police were forced to use lathicharge and teargas to bring the situation under control, resulting in injuries to 15 policemen.
Police Seek Public Help in Identifying Vandals
On Thursday morning, the Kolkata Police released photos of individuals suspected of being involved in the mob violence, seeking information from the public. Hours later, they announced the arrest of nine people, although their identities have not yet been disclosed.
Rumors of Seminar Hall Vandalism Denied by Police
There were also claims on social media that the seminar hall where the 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered had been vandalized by the mob. However, the Kolkata Police denied these allegations, cautioning against the spread of misinformation.
Governor Visits Hospital to Offer Support
On Thursday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the hospital to express solidarity with the doctors and medical students. During his visit, he assured them of his support, acknowledging their feelings of insecurity, trauma, and terror following the tragic incident and the subsequent violence.
