KGF 2 to RRR: Biggest hits of South that overtook Bollywood in 2022

Films from the South Indian industries are not only breaking records in their home markets, but they are also unstoppable in theatres in other parts of the country. Whether they were Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, or Malayalam films, they found their audience in the Hindi belt as well. Ever since cinema halls reopened following a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19, the trend of regional films crossing over 300 crore mark and working pan India has gone upward and has even taken over the Hindi cinema industry.
This year, we saw a plethora of South films taking over Bollywood and wowing the audience with their impeccable storytelling and performances.
Topping the list would be none other than filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s directorial venture RRR which proved to be a global sensation. Featuring Ram Charan and Jr NTR in lead roles, the film collected Rs 1200 crore plus.
Some of the biggest hits this year also came from the Kannada film industry, including KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara. Winning over Hindi movies, Yash starrer KGF: Chapter 2 took the box office by storm and grossed Rs 1200 crore at the box office. Rishab Shetty’s Kantara is still making headlines after releasing pan-India. The film made a historic entry into the Rs 300 crore and left everyone surprised.
Superstar Kamal Hassan’s Vikram also enthralled moviegoers across the country. With slick action-packed scenes, the film created havoc at the box office and broke several records by becoming the second-highest-grossing Tamil film and the fourth-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.
The list will be incomplete without magician Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan I which impressed everyone with its stunning visuals and detailed storytelling. The Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer earned more than Rs 500 crore at the box office.
As the year comes to an end, experts have noticed that South Indian films have performed better than Bollywood movies.
