Ke Huy Quan reveals what Steven Spielberg told him post his Oscar win
Quan debuted in Hollywood with the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His breakout role at 12, Quan is now 51 when he has made a shocking comeback into the industry.
According to a report in Variety, during a commercial break between the Oscar announcements, went over to where Spielberg was sitting with his wife, actress Kate Capshaw. Capshaw and Quan last met during the shoot of Temple of Doom four decades earlier where the two starred together. After initial words, Spielberg put his hands on Quan’s shoulders and said, “You are now an Oscar-winning actor.”
How Quan got cast in Indiana Jones
As per the report, much like many other immigrants, Quan’s parents wanted him to become a doctor or lawyer. However, fate played its role, when his younger brother attended an open casting call to play Short Round, Indiana Jones’ sidekick. But there was something about 12-year-old Quan which caught the attention of the makers and he landed the role as the perfect sidekick to Hollywood’s most famous archaeologist. He would go on to star in another Spielberg film the next year with Richard Donner’s The Goonies.
