Karnataka: Right-wing group demands permission to hold puja in Jamia Masjid, calls it Anjaneya Temple

In yet another development in Karnataka, a right-wing group demanded permission to hold puja inside a mosque in Mandya and said the structure is “originally” a temple.
The group filed a memorandum with the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya to allow worship of the ‘Anjaneya’ idol at the Jamia Masjid in the city. They further claimed that the structure had been originally a temple that was converted into a mosque.
In the letter, they demanded permission to perform puja inside the mosque.
The right-wing group claimed that the Jamia Masjid has been built on the Anjaneya Temple which stood here in medieval times. There is historical evidence that proves the mosque has been built over a temple, they added.
They claimed that Tipu Sultan wrote about this in a letter to the king of Persia Khalif and demanded that the archaeological department must consider the documents and investigate the matter.
They also demanded permission for taking bath in the pond situated on the premises of the mosque.
The development has come amid a controversial survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, which certain Hindu groups claim was built on a temple.
As the third day of the court-ordered videography survey of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple-Gyanvapi Mosque complex in Varanasi concluded on Monday, the Hindu petitioner in the case, Sohan Lal Arya claimed that the committee found a Shivling at the complex.
Arya, who accompanied the court commission for the mosque survey, said that they have found “conclusive evidence”.
This comes a day ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing on a plea seeking a stay on the survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex.
A bench, headed by Justice DY Chandrachud, will hear the plea of the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee tomorrow, May 17. The three days long survey, however, has been completed.
