The Karnataka Traffic Police Department want to extend the 50% rebate offer on all traffic violation fees for two more weeks, a recent report said. The information was reportedly revealed by Justice B Veerappa, who is the executive chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA).
The KSLSA has already reached out to the state government asking for the extension of the rebate offer considering the good response received to date, The Hindustan Times said in a report.
The 50% “discount offer” was enforced on February 2 for a period of 10 days. “In the backdrop of the factors outlined in the proposal, for the cases that will be settled before February 11, 2023, a rebate of 50 per cent has been ordered as a one-time measure,” the order on the proposal read.
However, the KSLSA was reportedly surprised by the positive response the move received from the public. By the time the validity of the rebate offer was closed on February 11, Saturday, a record 64,13,608 cases were settled in the Lok Adalat of which 52,11,424 were traffic challan cases, the HT report said. Less than half of the violations have been resolved by the police in this manner, reports said.
This brought in a hefty sum of Rs 152 crore to the coffers.
Traffic violations have been fined Rs 530 crore by the police department across Karnataka with the lion’s share of cases reported in Bengaluru. The state capital alone contributed about Rs 500 crore to the department, the news report said.
