Karan Johar trolled for promoting matrimonial platform only for ‘highly educated’ people; netizens call him ‘brand manager for elitism’

Celebrities often come under fire for their controversial comments during interviews. Not just that, some even face the wrath of netizens for their dialogues in films and problematic commercials. The latest to join the list is filmmaker Karan Johar. The Brahmastra producer is currently being slammed online for promoting a matrimonial platform that has apparently been launched exclusively for ‘highly educated’ people.
The site which will have alma maters of India’s top 15 colleges has Karan as the brand ambassador. In a video, KJo is seen talking about why ‘mental compatibility’ is important between couples. “Hum ek baar jeete hai, ek baar marte hai. Aur shaadi bhi ek hi baar karte hai. Isiliye, bahot zaruri hai ki life partner ka decision humara correct ho. Aur yeh aasan nahi hai, especially for highly-educated. Qki agar aap highly educated ho toh aap age, caste, height, vagera dekhne se pehle, ek partner me mental compatibility dhundte ho,” Kjo says in the video.
Sharing it, he wrote in the caption, “A matrimonial platform like no other – IITIIMShaadi.com! And I’m super excited to see some ‘real’ love come to life, not just reel! If you are looking for your life partner, https://www.iitiimshaadi.com/ should be your go-to site. They invite alumni of the top 10-15 colleges from all fields to register and find a match amongst each other!”
Both, the concept of the site and the brand ambassador received severe backlash online. A user wrote, “Are you serious?? If this isn’t a joke then you are by endorsing this ridiculous platform.” Another said, “Ridonculous Karan! Mental compatibility isn’t decided by the institute you graduate from and supporting platforms (IIT IIM Shaadi) like such isn’t helping really be progressive in today’s world.”
A furious netizen commented, “This whole concept is so offensive… Are they trying to say that an IIT/IIM alumni will be mentally compatible only with another IIT/IIM alumni?! Ridiculous!”
