The North vs South debate has been going on a for while now. Many celebrities from Bollywood as well as from the Southern industries have given their takes on the same.
The debate had started after movies such as Pushpa: The Rise, RRR, and KGF: Chapter 2 did humungous business in the Hindu circuits, whereas Bollywood films like Heropanti 2, Bachchhan Paandey, and, Jayeshbhai Jordaar failed miserably.
Now, Karan Johar, in a recent interview, has shared his opinion on why Bollywood films are lagging behind. He talked about how filmmakers from down South have ample conviction in their projects and do not seek any validation.
Speaking to Film Companion, Karan said, “I think we are victims of everything we should be running away from like paid PR. I think we are also victims of herd mentality. I feel that filmmakers from the South know what they want and they’re not seeking validation. They have conviction that just isn’t present in our cinema where everyone just hops on whatever trend is popular.”
The producer-director further spoke about how he himself sought acceptance from others when he decided to try his hands at a different kind of cinema than what he had been making.
“When I saw movies like Lagaan getting nominated at the Oscars, I also tried to win awards with My Name is Khan but eventually realised that I was neither here nor there with my films, so I went back to making the films I was passionate about,” Karan added.
Meanwhile, Karan is bankrolling one of the most ambitious projects to come out of Bollywood – Brahmastra. The Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer will have a pan-India release and is expected to revive the fortunes of the Hindi film industry.
