The highly anticipated trailer for Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency was released  at a grand event in Mumbai. The film, set during the turbulent period of the Emergency in 1975 India, features Kangana in the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Emergency is slated for release in theatres on September 6, 2024.

A Portrayal of India’s ‘Darkest Chapter’

In Emergency, Kangana Ranaut brings to life the intense political drama surrounding one of the most controversial periods in Indian history. The trailer showcases her portrayal of Indira Gandhi as she navigates the ‘darkest chapter’ in the country’s history, dealing with political unrest, wars, and personal challenges throughout her career.

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade. Shreyas Talpade takes on the role of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, while Anupam Kher portrays the influential leader Jayaprakash Narayan. The late Satish Kaushik makes a posthumous appearance as former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram.

Trailer Offers a Glimpse into Indira Gandhi’s Complex Life

The trailer not only delves into the political landscape of the time but also sheds light on Indira Gandhi’s personal journey. It depicts her relationship with her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and traces her ascent in Indian politics. The film hints at how her life was akin to a Shakespearean tragedy, filled with both power and pathos.

Not a Biopic, but a Political Drama

Kangana Ranaut, who announced Emergency in 2021, has clarified that while the film is rooted in political history, it is not a biopic of Indira Gandhi. In addition to playing the lead role, Kangana has also taken on the mantle of director for the project.

Emergency is produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films and is touted as a mega-budget production. The film is set to offer a vivid depiction of one of the most controversial episodes in Indian democracy, focusing on India’s first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Emergency will hit theatres on September 6, 2024.
