Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan is set to take oath as Rajya Sabha MP, marking his parliamentary debut. While speaking to the media, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief said, “I am going to take the oath and register my name in Delhi today. I am going to fulfil this duty with honour given to me as an Indian.” This marks a significant milestone in his political career as a 70-year-old who launched his party in Tamil Nadu in 2017.
After securing around 4% vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kamal Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, contested in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls. Early trends showed him leading the Coimbatore South constituency, but he narrowly lost the seat to the BJP Candidate Vanathi Srinivasan. While Srinivasan secured 34.38 per cent of the total vote share, Haasan scored 33.26.
MNM Founder, Haasan, however, pulled out from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and instead joined the campaign for the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu. Haasan has now been rewarded with a seat in the Upper House. With Haasan now officially joining forces with the DMK, the MNM will likely contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections as part of the DMK-led alliance. From a cinema icon to a change-driven political leader, and now an Indian lawmaker, Haasan’s entry into Parliament adds a fresh phase to his public career.
