Just because I don’t like it…: R Ashwin continues his support to running out a non-striker

The debate surrounding running out a non-striker has been the talk of the town since Deepti Sharma dismissed England’s Charlotte Dean in the 3rd ODI of the series in September this year. The India all-rounder ran out the England batter who was trying to take an unfair advantage.
Many present and former players have shared their take on the matter. While the Indian cricket fraternity backed Deepti, the English cricket fraternity said it was against the Spirit of the Game. Surprisingly, none of the captains spoke about it at the presser before the start of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
R Ashwin, who is a strong supporter of running a player at the non-striker end, has once again thrown his weight behind it. Speaking to the reporters in Australia a day before the T20 World Cup game against Zimbabwe, Ashwin said that this mode of dismissal is legal and he doesn’t see any problem with it.
“Honestly, I also wouldn’t like to get out like that, just because I don’t like it’s not like I can’t get out like that. So nobody likes getting out. I don’t like being nicked off bowled, run out, lbw or anyway, likewise, I also wouldn’t like to get run out at the non-striker’s end. Because it’s a form of dismissal and it’s pretty legal and I don’t see any problem with it,” Ashwin said.
“There are a lot of arguments around it Like anything else in this world when something’s happened new, you’re gonna have people with contradicting thoughts. Whether you want to do it or don’t want to do it is absolutely fine.”
Playing for Punjab Kings, Ashwin famously ran out Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler during an IPL 2019 fixture. Buttler, who has been dismissed twice in this manner, is strongly against being run out at the non-striker end. Ashwin and Buttler are now teammates at Rajasthan Royals.
