Dinesh Karthik has decisively dismissed the idea of Jasprit Bumrah taking on the captaincy role. Bumrah, known as one of the top bowlers across all formats, has expressed his aspiration to be India’s permanent captain in the future. He has already led the Indian side in several matches, including the T20I series against Ireland and the postponed Edgbaston Test against England.
In an interview with Indian Express, Bumrah even described himself as his preferred captain, reinforcing his interest in the position. Although he was a strong contender for the T20I captaincy following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, the BCCI opted for Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently designated for just one format.
Jasprit Bumrah ‘Kohinoor’ For Team India, Says Karthik
Karthik, who has referred to Bumrah as a ‘Kohinoor,’ believes that the fast bowler should not be made captain at this time. He stressed the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload carefully to keep him fit and effective for key matches.
“For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches, I keep saying this about Bumrah, he is like a Kohinoor diamond, we got to protect him, take care of him, make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format he makes an impact and that’s what we want,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
According to Dinesh Karthik seelectors should focus on making him play all the three formats,
“Everything right … He is calm cool, good maturity but he is a fast bowler so how can we play him for all three formats that is the biggest question the selectors would have had,” he added.
Bumrah was last seen in the T20 World Cup 2024, where he led the ‘Men in Blue’ towards victory. He picked a total of 15 wickets. Since then, he has been given rest by the selectors, missing the tours to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Additionally, he, along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, is one of the notable players not selected for the Duleep Trophy squads.
Jasprit Bumrah Likely To Feature In Test Series Against Bangladesh
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to make his comeback to competitive cricket next month in the upcoming two-Test series between India and Bangladesh.
“According to the available information, Bumrah could feature in one of the two Tests against Bangladesh, and since there is just a three-day break between each of the three Tests against New Zealand, the 30-year-old pacer is likely to feature only in two Tests against the Kiwis” said News 18.
“We cannot rest everyone at one go because you need experience, even in home conditions. Like in the case of the England series, where India paired a senior pacer with a youngster, a similar approach would be adopted. There is a good crop of fast bowlers at the Duleep Trophy who have been picked keeping the Australia tour in mind. If they do well, we can use them in home conditions before taking them to Australia,” a BCCI official was quoted as per Network 18.
The series is set to commence on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the second Test scheduled to be held at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
