‘It’s embarrassing’: Michael Vaughan slammed for defending English fans booing German anthem at Euro 2020

Wembley was at its vocal best as England locked horns with Germany in their Round of 16 clash at Euro 2020 on Tuesday (June 29). The Three Lions faithful were pumped ahead of the much-awaited contest and ensured they cheered the players throughout the ninety minutes as goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane sealed a convincing 2-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s men.

While boos and jeers are normal in the stands in football, some England fans resorted to booing the German national anthem ahead of the start of the game on Tuesday. While many have criticised the English fans for booing Germany’s national anthem, former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan took to Twitter on Wednesday to extend his support to the fans.

In a tweet, Vaughan said booing of the German anthem has always happened and that it should happen always. The former cricketer’s tweet didn’t go down well with fans, who were quick to slam him for defending the vile English supporters.

“I don’t understand all those on here abusing the England fans last night for booing the German anthem. It always happens & always should .. it’s only like booing the villain at pantomime .. get over it .. #itscominghame,” Vaughan wrote in a tweet.

“Because it’s childish and embarrassing. Because it’s rarely done elsewhere,” wrote a fan, replying to Vaughan. “Sorry, it lacks class and respect. It’s pathetic,” said another.

It was a quiet first half between the two sides before Germany came close to scoring the opening goal after halftime when Kai Havertz was denied after a brilliant save from Jordan Pickford. Luke Shaw then produced a stunning assist for Sterling to tap it home from a close range and put England ahead in the 75th minute.

Jack Grealish’s introduction in the 69th minute added more creative balance to the England attack and the Aston Villa star was quick to combine with Shaw again to set up the second goal for the Three Lions. A cross from Grealish was met by a header from skipper Kane, who scored his first goal of the tournament to seal the deal for England in the 86th minute.

England will be up against Ukraine in the quarterfinal next and will be hoping to go the distance this year wth a remarkable squad at their disposal.
