Issuing threats is not Indian culture: Uma Bharti backs Nupur Sharma amid Prophet remarks row

BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday said that her party has already given punishment to party’s spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks and called out those who issued death threats to her.
“Our party gave punishment to spokesperson and MEA handled situation on reaction of Muslim nations well but threats to Nupur Sharma is not Indian culture. It all started during UP elections when every political party spewed venom and tense atmosphere was created,” Bharti said.
The BJP on Sunday suspended Sharma over her alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad. The BJP’s disciplinary committee said she had expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters, which is in clear violation of its constitution.
Amid backlash by Muslim groups and the sharp reactions from countries like Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, the BJP issued a statement asserting that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insults of any religious personality.
After the action, Sharma withdrew her controversial statement and claimed that her comments were a reaction to “continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev (Lord Shiva)”.
Sharma also alleged that she is receiving death threats after her remarks on Prophet Mohammad. She also filed a complaint at cyber cell unit against various persons regarding death threats and targeted hatred to her.
Following her complaint, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR under IPC sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
The police also provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family
