Israel has issued a strong warning to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, saying it will pursue him. The threat comes as reports emerge of another top Iranian official being killed in an airstrike. Israel’s military said it would hunt down and “neutralise” Mojtaba Khamenei, who took power after the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A military spokesman said, “We don’t know about Mojtaba Khamenei, we don’t hear him, we don’t see him, but I can tell you one thing: we will track him down, find him, and neutralise him,”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also criticised Iran’s leadership, saying change in the country would take time but could happen if pressure continues.
Has a key Iranian official been killed?
Israel claims it killed senior Iranian figure Ali Larijani in an airstrike, though Tehran has not confirmed this.
If true, it would be a major setback for Iran, as Larijani was seen as a close ally of the late supreme leader and a key figure in defence and regional strategy.
Iranian officials have instead called on people to rally in support of the government, while large crowds gathered in Tehran and other cities.
How is the conflict affecting the wider region?
Fighting has spread across the Middle East, with airstrikes reported in several countries including Lebanon and Iraq. Iran has also responded by targeting US-allied nations and restricting movement in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies. Oil prices have risen sharply, while US President Donald Trump criticised allies for refusing to help escort tankers, saying, “WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!”
Meanwhile, many civilians have been displaced, especially in Lebanon, where people are struggling to find shelter as the conflict continues.
